Verbal
self-defense is one of the most important parts of a
full-fledged self-defense program. Most fights start with a
war of words then explode into something far more serious.
Among other things arguing has been shown to increase stress
levels, cause shorter life spans and actually cause stress
related diseases. So it's not a bad idea to learn how to
avoid verbal fisticuffs.

Verbal self-defense is the method that will help you in
defend yourself from getting involved in a heated argument.
The Fundamentals Of Verbal Self-Defense
Verbal self-defense can be categorized in to three parts.
-
Deciphering
the situation
-
Listening
instead of reading between the lines
-
Mastering the
art of responding
Deciphering
The Situation: This is the most important part to
consider in a verbal defense program. It would be wise to
understand the psychology of a verbal attacker & reason of
his attack instead of getting hurt. If a person is showering
hostile words on you, he is not doing it just for the heck
of it or because it is his hobby to do so. Chronic verbal
abusers behave the way they do for one of two reasons:
-
Lack Of
Education: Most verbal abusers are not aware of any
other way of communication. All they need is education & all
you need to do is to ignore them & their comments
completely.
-
Desire To
Get Attention: The leftover population engaged in verbal
abuse is desperate for attention. Hence, ignoring these
people would also serve the purpose and in case you still
find the attacker's behavior unacceptable, it would be
better to turn around & flee!
Listening
Instead Of Reading Between The Lines: Listening to the
speaker is very significant for communication. Speaking or
jumping into conclusions way before a person completes this
speech would result into a misunderstanding that could also
take shape of a big argument. Hence, the key is to
understand what the communicator means by being patient &
listening to him carefully.
Mastering
The Art Of Responding: Most people tend to respond a
verbal attack by offering a person back what he/she has
offered them. This may be by abusing a person in return or
using malicious words to subdue the other person. This
actually results in a more serious argument as you are
encouraging your attacker.
Remember, silence is the most severe punishment a verbal
abuser could get. It is a different kind of counter attack.
Remember, "Silence is golden." The verbal self-defense
system helps a person lead a comfortable & happy life.
